Installing and activating
Filmina is a DMG you drag into Applications. There is no installer asking questions, no account and nothing to set up before studying.
Downloading it
- Open the download page from the Mac you are going to study on and get the DMG.
- Drag Filmina into the Applications folder before opening it for the first time. Opened from the DMG, it cannot save anything where it should.
- macOS checks the first launch, as it does with any app that does not come from the store.
The first time
The welcome is five screens and the language is picked on the first one: Filmina opens in the system language, and if that is not yours you change it right there, not six screens later.
Those screens are where the two models download. Neither downloads twice, and neither lives inside the app:
- The one that explains. About 10 GB, required, and the only thing you have to wait for. It goes to
~/.ollama/models, the usual folder: if you already had it, it does not download again, and if you install Ollama yourself tomorrow it finds it there. The download can be paused and resumed, and you can start using the app while it runs. - The one that listens to you. Optional, and it is what makes it possible to tell the slide back in your own words. There are two: Fast -290 MB, answers instantly- and Precise -970 MB, three times slower, better with technical vocabulary and accents-. You keep one: downloading the other replaces it. If you do not want it now, you add it later from Settings.
If you already had Ollama running on its usual port, Filmina uses that one instead of starting a second. Two engines on the same GPU get in each other's way, and the models one downloaded are the ones the other needs.
Filmina Free
Without paying anything you can open the first 10 documents and the first 100 slides of each. Everything else is whole: the three detail levels, every voice, the questions. No card and no email needed.
The count does not go down when you delete a document, and reopening one that was already counted -or uploading the same PDF again- does not spend another: a document is identified by its contents, not by its name.
Activating the key
When you buy, a key arrives by email, shaped like FILM-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX. You paste it on the app's home screen, where it says you already bought it, and it stays activated on that Mac.
- It is verified offline. The key comes signed and activating it means redoing the signature on your machine: the app promises to work without a connection, so activating it cannot depend on a server.
- It never expires, and there is no auto-renewal because there is no subscription.
- It includes every update to version 1.
- It is for one device.
- The student licence is exactly the same, at half the price, validated with your university email. It does not expire when you graduate.
