Filmina, in your browser

2.9 · October 5, 2026

2.9 brings Filmina to your browser. Nothing to install: you use it from any computer or phone, and the cloud does the heavy lifting. Your machine just shows the slide and plays the voice.

New

  • Nothing to download: no app, no multi-gigabyte models. You sign in with your email and a code we send you, no password.
  • Runs on Windows, Mac, Linux, Android, iPhone and iPad, and adds to your home screen like an app.
  • Your classes, your notes and how far you've studied follow you from one device to the next.
  • Mina looks at the whole slide, not just its text: it explains the chart, the diagram or the table along with what's written.
  • Mina, from any screen: one chat per course that opens from the bubble in the corner. It knows which class and which slide you're on, and you choose whether you're asking about that class, the course or everything.
  • Practice without having studied, on the whole presentation. If you've already started it, you choose between up to where you got or all of it.
  • Undo: when you delete, move or rename something, a notice at the bottom lets you take it back, and in notes you undo one block at a time.
  • Assist modes, in Settings, Accessibility. ADHD mode goes one paragraph at a time, with less movement around it and 15-minute blocks. Dyslexia mode makes the type bigger, gives it more room and highlights the paragraph being read.
  • Emails before each exam, one with your week and reminders to study, plus browser notifications. In Settings you choose which ones you get.
  • Class material now takes Word files too.
  • Two plans: Free, no card, and Pro, monthly or with a pass for the semester. You pay in your currency, and if Pro runs out of something for the month, you top it up.
  • The apps for Mac, Windows, iPhone and iPad are on their way.

Improvements

  • Classes open without waiting on the network: the slide where you left off shows up right away and the next ones are ready before you get there.
  • The slide grows to fill the viewer.
  • The summary no longer waits for you to finish the class: Mina builds it while reading the presentation, and tells you how many slides it's done.
  • Before you transcribe a class, the screen tells you how your microphone sounds and how your internet is doing.
  • The rain and the sea in the background sound are now real recordings.
  • If your internet drops, a notice at the bottom tells you, with a button to reload.

Fixes to 2.8

2.8.1 · October 2, 2026

Each class's notes show up on its page again. They were never deleted: they were saved, but the page wasn't showing them.

Fixes

  • A class's page shows its notes again.
  • Finishing a class marks it as finished again, with its celebration.
  • Mind map cards are no longer cut off at the bottom.

Your exam, up front

2.8 · October 2, 2026

2.8 puts your exams in view: upcoming ones on the home screen, what your professor said in their plan, and the date in your calendar. And every class tells you how you're doing with it.

New

  • Upcoming exams on the home screen, above recent files: the format, how much of the plan you've done and when it is. Tap one to open its plan.
  • Exam notes: what your professor said and a list of to-dos that aren't studying. Open them with Add notes, next to Study plan; they save on their own.
  • Add to calendar: the exam day goes to Google Calendar, Apple Calendar or Outlook in one tap.
  • Every class tells you how you're doing with it. Haven't seen it, Started and Finished are set for you; Struggling, Almost and Got it you pick on its page, and the plan builds its steps from that.

Improvements

  • In the viewer, background sound opens its list from the corner, with the volume and a button to pause it.
  • Plan steps suggest skimming the class instead of a quick mode that no longer exists.
  • While Mina is working out the explanation, a study tip no longer shows up on the side.

Fixes

  • Enter on a to-do pasted into a note opens the next to-do, with its checkbox.
  • The sound list and the timer no longer stay open at the same time.

Fixes to 2.7

2.7.1 · October 2, 2026

The card that asks whether you'd recommend Filmina is simpler and easier to read.

Fixes

  • On that card, the number you picked stays visible when you hover over it.
  • It has a single, bigger button to send, and the comment sits further from the numbers.

Class material

2.7 · October 2, 2026

2.7 lets you add what goes with a class: the textbook, a PDF, the recording or a YouTube video. Mina uses it when explaining and answering, and tells you where it came from.

New

  • Material in Notes: with the clip next to New note you can add a book, a PDF, an audio file or a YouTube video, to one class or the whole folder. You can move it to another class and turn it off like a note.
  • When you earn a badge, a card shows up with the medal, confetti and a little sound. If you earn it while practicing, it shows at the end instead of getting lost.
  • Tables you paste from Claude, ChatGPT or another AI come in as a table in the note. Tab moves between cells and Mina reads them row by row.

Improvements

  • When not everything fits in the plan, the notice comes in an amber card with a clock and what's left out in bold.
  • In Practice and while building the plan, the progress bar sits at the very bottom, with where you are on the right.
  • In Your time, the streak sits under the plants and the four numbers under the calendar.

Fixes

  • A photo pasted into a note no longer sometimes leaves an empty frame.
  • The class page title updates when the class is renamed, like when it gets numbered in its folder.

Fixes to 2.6

2.6.1 · October 2, 2026

Background sound is as loud as it should be, and a plan step no longer gets checked too early.

Fixes

  • Background sound plays louder: at half volume you could barely hear it. If the system cuts the audio, it comes back on its own.
  • The volume bar is thinner, and its handle shrinks a little when you hover over it.
  • Read the summary no longer gets checked just by opening it when the summary isn't ready yet.

Background sound

2.6 · October 2, 2026

2.6 brings a sound to study with: rain, sea or steady noise, which covers what's going on around you without asking for attention.

New

  • Background sound at the bottom left: rain, sea, brown noise or white noise, with its own volume. It never starts on its own, remembers the last one you picked and gets quieter while Mina speaks.

Improvements

  • When the plan finishes building, the wait fades out and the plan comes in piece by piece, with no jump in between.
  • In the mind map, a long card at the bottom fades at the edge so you can tell it keeps going.
  • The badge for your first finished folder is now called First exam taken.

Fixes

  • On a class page, the folder name no longer shows a border at night.

Study plan

2.5 · October 1, 2026

2.5 maps out the road to your exam: tell it when you take it and what it covers, and Filmina spreads what's left over the days you have, based on what you've already studied.

New

  • A study plan in every folder. Answer when the exam is, how you'll be tested, what it covers, how well you know each class and how much time you have a day, and Filmina lays out each day's steps until the date.
  • In each class, Progress shows how many days are left until the exam, what you have to do with that class and how you're doing: how far you've gotten, how your last practice went and how much you studied it in the last two weeks.
  • A streak of days in a row and badges in Your time. A day counts if you study ten minutes, and every full week saves a log for a day you can't.
  • A class summary opens as a mind map, full screen.
  • Questions you answer on your own show up as a flashcard that flips with each tap.
  • In Practice, matching questions are answered by drawing an arrow from each term to its definition.
  • While Mina gets something ready, a tip to study better. And if it takes a while, a game with Mina to pass the wait.

Improvements

  • In case questions, the situation sits in a card on the left with the question right below it.
  • Classes added to a folder get numbered automatically, in the order they arrive.
  • When you ask, the class material shows right there on the side.
  • The four cards on a class page are flat, in a tint of their color.
  • The map, the note and summary panels, photos and crop close with a fade instead of cutting off.

Fixes

  • The play button dims completely, without the bottom half staying white.

Fixes to 2.4.1

2.4.2 · September 29, 2026

Four details in notes and on a document's page that looked wrong.

Fixes

  • Highlighting no longer makes the bar flicker, colors no longer turn white on hover, and the chosen one has a ring.
  • The notes bar hides while a photo is uploading or being read.
  • On a document's page, Add to a folder opens its menu without it closing right away.
  • When cropping an image, Cancel is visible in the light theme too.

Touch-ups to 2.4

2.4.1 · September 29, 2026

What got polished right after 2.4 came out.

Improvements

  • The notes bar is narrower: with text selected, Comment and remove highlight move to the bottom row, and transcribe is no longer in it.
  • The four cards on a document's page have a soft reflection instead of two stripes, and Practice moves up, next to Study.
  • Dragging over a button or over Progress and Material no longer selects its text.

Notes in color

2.4 · September 29, 2026

2.4 is about notes: highlight in color, pick several blocks at once and pull the text out of an image. And time in class now counts as studying.

New

  • Highlight in your notes. When you select text, the bar adds a second row with bold, italic, underline and six highlight colors.
  • Pick several blocks at once, like in Notion: drag from an empty spot to select them, then move, copy, cut or paste them together.
  • An image pasted into a note can put its text right below it, with the new button next to crop.
  • In the Material tab, tapping a slide opens it large, like the images in your notes.
  • Your study time counts the class you're transcribing, even if you go a while without touching the Mac, and loose notes too.

Improvements

  • A presentation without a folder can be added to one from its page.
  • When deleting documents, each one shows how many notes it has, and you can keep them as loose notes in the same folder.
  • Typing > and a space builds the toggle without the hint text overlapping it.
  • Now and then, after you finish something, Mina asks in a corner how likely you are to recommend Filmina, from 0 to 10.

Notify me responds

2.3.3 · September 28, 2026

On the Filmina Pro card on the home screen, the Notify me button now reacts when you hover it, in light and dark.

Documents open again

2.3.2 · September 28, 2026

In 2.3.0 and 2.3.1, clicking a document on the home screen or in the folders bar did nothing. They open as usual again.

The right color from the start

2.3.1 · September 28, 2026

The window now opens in your Mac's theme: it used to start black and switch to light a moment later.

When the theme changes with the app open, because your Mac's changed or you picked one in Settings, it fades instead of cutting. The Filmina Pro card on the home screen now animates in like the others.

Free, no limits, and in daylight too

2.3 · September 28, 2026

2.3 removes the limit: Filmina for Mac is free, with no cap on documents or slides and no key. It also has a light mode that follows your Mac.

New

  • No limits: open as many documents as you want and every slide gets read. There's no key to activate anymore.
  • Light mode. In Settings, under language, pick Match system, Light or Dark; by default it follows your Mac, and the window changes with it.
  • Filmina Pro is coming soon: the cloud version, in the browser, with no models to download. You can leave your email on the home screen and we'll let you know the day it opens.

Improvements

  • If you keep poking Mina, she no longer cries: it tickles and she laughs.
  • In silent mode, Mina rises from her nap to the question without a jump.
  • Commenting on a note sits next to the transcript, and opening comments lets you write one right away.
  • What you paste inside a toggle stays inside, and typing > followed by a space makes one.
  • Shrinking and growing the folders bar fades as a whole, with nothing visibly reshuffling, and its menu closes with its button.
  • The app counts which features get used so we know what to improve, never the content: not your documents, not your notes, not what you type. It's in the privacy policy.

Notes you can talk back to

2.2 · September 28, 2026

2.2 is for coming back to what you wrote. Leave comments on your notes, tuck parts away in toggles and, when class ends, the transcript comes with its own summary.

New

  • Comments on notes: select some text, a whole block, a link or an image and leave a comment on it. Under the title you see how many there are and step through them with arrows, and when one is no longer needed, you close it.
  • When you finish transcribing, the class card comes with a summary: the topics with their key ideas and, separately, what the professor asked you to do. Switch between what was said and the summary right on the card.
  • Toggles in notes: a line with a triangle that tucks away whatever sits below it, like Notion's toggles. Closed stays closed, and Mina still reads it.
  • Images in a note can be cropped right there, and the full-size photo now fits on screen.

Improvements

  • Transcription keeps going even if you close the note or open another one. A pill next to the clock tells you it's recording and takes you back with one tap.
  • You can start transcribing a class in a note that already has writing, from the top or from the toolbar, and a transcript can be deleted from its header, with a confirmation.
  • A note can be taken out of its class: it goes back to being a standalone note, with its photos and comments.
  • Typing -> in a note turns it into an arrow.
  • Filmina adapts to narrow windows: the note fills the screen, the sidebar opens with its button, and Settings, Activity and Recents fit the column.
  • During setup, you pick the mode before it downloads, with the recommended one marked. Before, it downloaded whichever one your memory called for.
  • The startup wait is now Mina making faces, and Check for updates says Checking while it asks.

Fixes

  • A quiet class is no longer thrown away as silence, and with background noise the transcript no longer repeats the same phrase over and over.
  • Deleting below a divider no longer takes the divider with it.

Mina gets glasses

2.1.4 · September 28, 2026

Mina now wears glasses, and they change with the time of day: clear during the day, yellow as evening falls, and red at night.

Filmina's icon is now Mina. While the app is open, the glasses on the Dock icon change color with the time too.

While transcribing a class, you can switch microphones without stopping it, from the menu next to Stop and Continue. And Continue no longer gets stuck when it can't find last time's microphone: it uses the system one.

You can now switch microphones right from the transcript, before resuming or in the middle of class, without stopping it. And Resume no longer fails when the microphone you picked last time isn't there: it uses your Mac's.

Class transcription is back

2.1.3 · September 26, 2026

Transcribing a class kept listening but never wrote anything. Now the text shows up again as the class goes on. Dictating a note and explaining a slide in your own words had the same problem, and both are fixed too.

Links you can open

2.1.2 · September 25, 2026

An address typed or pasted into a note becomes a link: you read the site and the page, without the https, and clicking it opens it in your browser.

Filmina is also now signed and checked by Apple. It opens with a double-click the first time, no trip to System Settings.

Both ways in, side by side

2.1.1 · September 24, 2026

On the home screen, the take-notes card now sits right under the one for bringing in a presentation. They're the two ways to start, and now they read as a pair.

Class day

2.1 · September 24, 2026

2.1 is for the day of the class, not just the night before the exam. You take notes before you have the slides, Mina transcribes what's said, you study in blocks with breaks, and ⌘K finds anything.

New

  • Transcribe the class. Mina listens through the microphone and adds what's said to the note, a few seconds at a time, in a column next to your notes. The audio isn't kept, and the transcript counts for explaining like any note.
  • Notes without the slides. From the home screen or a folder you take notes before you have the file, and when it arrives you attach them to their class: upload it or pick one you already had. A new note is titled with the day.
  • Study blocks: a clock next to the X, from 5 to 60 minutes. It ends when the slide does, chimes when time is up, and the break starts when you ask for it. The fourth block celebrates the session.
  • Search everything you've studied with ⌘K: documents, folders, what each slide says and what Mina explained, your notes, your questions and the summaries. Each result takes you where it is.
  • Light mode, for 8 GB Macs. It's a smaller model than Balanced, and if your Mac is one of those, Filmina switches on its own.
  • A microphone to dictate your question, in Ask and with the raised hand.

Improvements

  • A document's page opens on Progress: how far along you are and how many minutes are left, how you did and how you've been studying it day by day. The slides are in the other tab, Material.
  • Practice counts questions, not minutes: the top says “3 of 8” and a bar fills with each answer. The clock only runs while a question is on screen, and there's no countdown while the first ones are being prepared.
  • In the viewer, the file name sits in a pill at the top left, the time left in the class goes next to Mina, and the shortcuts at the bottom are always the same three.
  • The folders bar shows what each item is: slides, document or note.
  • Language, voice, speed and microphone are picked from Filmina's own menu instead of the system dropdown.
  • The week of plants moves from the home screen to Your time, under the title.
  • The engine uses less memory: one model and one request at a time, and only one per Mac even if you open Filmina twice.
  • Activating Filmina Pro stores a certificate signed for your Mac, and the app checks it offline. New keys need this version.

Fixes

  • The play button no longer flickers when moving to the next slide.
  • The first piece being dictated or transcribed could get lost if Mina's voice was loading at the same time.

The settings panel, with nothing showing through

2.0.6 · September 24, 2026

Switching to silent mode with settings open, the text of sleeping Mina showed through the panel, with the mode row as a rectangle on top. Now the panel covers what's behind it.

Improvements

  • While a new version downloads, the card's text breaks in a better place, so its two lines come out even.

Settings and Activity close what's open

2.0.5 · September 24, 2026

With a note or the summary open, tapping Settings or Activity didn't show the screen: the open one stayed on top. Now it's saved, closed, and the screen comes in.

Improvements

  • Settings, Activity and Tell us have the same width, and the background of the open one is the same size in all three.
  • The Checking the download text breaks in a better place, so its two lines come out even.

The summary comes in silent mode too

2.0.4 · September 24, 2026

On the last slide, with its explanation ready, the class counts as finished even if you read it without voice.

Fixes

  • In silent mode the class never finished: the document page kept saying one was left and the summary wasn't built. Now reaching the last one is enough.
  • In a medium window, notes, the summary and practice take the width of the document page, without back. They close with the cross, and the page comes back with a fade.
  • Practice from the summary no longer flashes the document page before the practice.

The file panels pick the right thing

2.0.3 · September 24, 2026

Choosing a file from the macOS panel works the same as dragging it, and the new version notice reads better.

Improvements

  • Settings are a screen instead of a window on top: they open like your time, with back at the top, and from the document page they go back to it.
  • Check for a new version from settings, without waiting for Filmina to look on its own every six hours.
  • Model downloads can be paused and canceled. Canceling leaves the one you had, as if you never hit change.
  • Activity, below settings, opens your time from anywhere, and on the home week you tap today.
  • The new version notice, clearer: the arrow without a border and in a firmer green, both buttons the same size and what's new inside the text.

Fixes

  • Choosing the same presentation again in the panel did nothing. Dragging it worked; now both do.
  • The panel for adding an image to a note showed presentation files. Now it filters images, iPhone HEIC ones too.
  • Switching to silent slides instead of jumping: the mode pill no longer overshoots and bounces back, and sleeping Mina fades in.
  • A practice opened on the document page showed the summary's listen button. Not anymore, and if the summary was playing, it stops.
  • When opening Filmina, the title and cards showed up before Mina finished getting to the top. Now they come in once she's in place.

The result, in the color of how it went

2.0.2 · September 24, 2026

When a practice ends, the ring and the number take the color of how you did, like on the document page.

Fixes

  • A 36 showed up in green. Now it's green from 75, yellow from 50 and red below, the same cuts as the dot for each practice on the document page.

The notice looks like the app

2.0.1 · September 24, 2026

A new version is announced in a Filmina sheet instead of a macOS alert. It debuts with the next version, because the notice is shown by the one you already have installed.

Improvements

  • The new version notice is a sheet like the one for activating: which version it is, how big, a link to what's new, and the download bar in the same place. It comes in the app's language.

Fixes

  • Tapping Study from the document page made Mina drop twice when the slide took a while: the screen fade and her own move stepped on each other.

All without leaving the class

2.0 · September 24, 2026

Filmina is no longer just the class explained out loud. Now you can also ask it questions, take notes, practice, review and see how much you studied, all built on your own class material and without switching to another app.

New

  • Every document has its own page: from there you choose how to study it, read the summary, take notes and keep the slides at your side.
  • Ask without leaving the slide. You raise your hand, the voice pauses and Mina answers in text with the slide in front of you. When you close it, the class picks up where it was, and the conversation is saved with the presentation.
  • Ask, on the document page: a chat with the whole class. It finds the slides that talk about what you asked, answers with those and tells you which ones it comes from, so you can go look.
  • Class notes, written like in Notion: headings, lists, tasks and quotes. You can dictate them, and a photo of a notebook page is turned into text by macOS text recognition, without leaving your Mac.
  • What you write down goes into the explanation, the chat and the summary. What the professor said that is not on the slide now counts too, and every note has a switch to leave it out.
  • When the class ends, a summary by topic. You read it on the document page or listen to it in the voice of the class, lighting up word by word and starting wherever you tap.
  • Practice: a stretch of questions about what you already studied, adjusting to how you are doing. It saves at every step, picks up later if you leave halfway, and practicing again brings new questions, the ones you missed first.
  • Reviewing is remembering: Mina gives you a concept and a hint, you write what you recall, and only then do you see the ideas and the slides it comes from.
  • Subjects: colored folders in a sidebar on the left, so every class sits with the others from its subject.
  • Your time. On the home screen a plant grows for every day you studied, taller the more you really studied. Tap it and a day-by-day calendar opens, like GitHub's, with the days you study most and what you studied.
  • Silent mode, to read the class instead of listening to it. Mina falls asleep, the script stays on screen and the question shows up when you move to the next slide by hand.
  • If you switch to another app halfway through a document, ten minutes later a notification asks if we keep going. Only once, and never while Mina is talking.
  • Two performance modes, Balanced and Maximum. Filmina picks the one that fits your Mac's memory, and you can change it in Settings.

Improvements

  • "This is wrong", on every paragraph, replaces the flag from 1.2: it checks the paragraph against the slide and rewrites it right there, and if the paragraph repeated another one, it removes it.
  • The explanation comes out in the language of the presentation, and the player no longer has to ask.
  • Study always explains the whole class, and the level picker in the player is gone. To go back over something there are Review and Ask.
  • What you did not understand is no longer marked by hand. What you ask and how you do when practicing already tell what you are missing.
  • Delete several documents at once, grouped by folder, from the trash can in the sidebar.
  • When a new version comes out, besides the notice a small card stays on the home screen.
  • Each Filmina Pro key activates on one Mac.

Fixes

  • PowerPoint files convert even when Keynote is closed. Opening the file while Keynote was starting knocked it down; now Filmina waits until it is ready, and if Filmina opened it, it closes it again.
  • If a previous shutdown left the engine running, Filmina stops it at launch instead of waiting for an answer that never comes.
  • In the welcome screens, the model that listens to you comes already selected if it is on your Mac, and says so, instead of offering to download it again.
  • A chat answer no longer switches to Chinese halfway through.

Remembering you have been here

1.2.1 · September 22, 2026

The welcome screens came back every time you opened Filmina, and with them the question about the model that listens to you. Now it is written down next to your documents, where nothing takes it away.

Improvements

  • The home screen comes in through Mina: while the disk answers which presentations you have open, she is alone in the middle, big and laughing, and when the answer arrives she shrinks into her usual spot above the title. The home screen used to draw itself half finished, and the title jumped when the list showed up.
  • Settings now ends by saying which Filmina you have -Free, Pro or Student- and which version. It is the first thing anyone asks when something is off, and until now you had to go dig it up in the Finder.

Fixes

  • The welcome screens came back in full every time you opened the app, and on the last one they offered to download the model that listens to you all over again, when you already had it. That you have seen them is now written next to your documents: it used to live in the browser, which inside the app starts empty every time because the port changes.
  • The wave of your voice while you tell the slide back was showing in red, which everywhere else in the app means something went wrong. It is grey now: the pink one is the button you press when you are done.

Arguing with the explanation

1.2 · September 21, 2026

Every paragraph now has a second marker: the slide does not say this. You press it, it reads the slide again, and if you were right it rewrites the paragraph in front of you. And from here on, new versions install themselves.

New

  • «The slide does not say this», next to the marker for what you did not get. It is not a switch: it opens a review. If you were right, the paragraph is rewritten with the made-up part ruled out in writing and given a new voice; if you were not, it tells you that it was on the slide after all and nothing is left marked.
  • New versions install themselves. Filmina tells you when there is one, downloads it from inside the app and puts it in place, without going through the macOS screen saying it could not verify the file. Every version travels with a signature of its own, and what does not check out against it is not installed.
  • «Start with this one», the button that moves the slide you are looking at to the front of the queue. Skipping past a few slides left the one explaining stuck on an earlier one, and now the voice also hands over between sentences instead of finishing the whole paragraph.
  • «Back to the start», on the third step back in a row. Once you get there it turns into «Back to slide 55», which is the slide you left from: it is the second trip that makes the first one cheap.
  • Look at the slide up close with two fingers. What gets bigger is the whole canvas and not the image, so the frames marking what is being explained keep pointing at the same place. Changing slides brings it back whole.
  • The wave of your voice while you tell the slide back, above the microphone button. With the screen still, there is only one thing you wonder, and it is whether it is listening.
  • Mina listens: she tilts her head the opposite way from thinking, opens her eyes a little and nods every few seconds. And while she goes over what you said she starts thinking, which is the longest wait of the four questions and was the only one where the face said nothing.
  • Mina celebrates the one you get right and looks puzzled at the one you miss. Puzzled and not sad: missing one in four is part of answering, and a sad face would be the program passing judgement on you.

Improvements

  • The multiple choice question can be answered without leaving the keyboard: up and down walk the options, the numbers pick one straight away, and left and right go back to changing slides with the question open.
  • The autoplay switch is gone: the viewer always moves on to the next slide. What stops the run is the question, which waits for your answer, and anyone who wants to stay on a slide pauses.
  • What you said now fades at the edges instead of being cut off flat, and the veil only appears on the side that has more to show.

Fixes

  • A segment no longer tells what belongs to the one after it. When the voice ran ahead, the list was heard twice and the frame was left pointing at something else.
  • The glow of the format sheets, on the start screen, is no longer clipped into a square. The filter was on the SVG, which ties the blur to the size of the drawing, and the edge of the light showed on both sides of the row.

The first thing you see

1.1.1 · September 19, 2026

The welcome screens no longer let the home screen flash by before covering it, and the language can be changed right there, on the first of the five.

Improvements

  • The language can be changed from the first welcome screen. The app opens in the system language, and anyone opening it in one that was not theirs had five screens to get through before reaching the setting.
  • The window no longer writes its own name up top. On a black sheet, "Filmina" was the only thing there to read, and it was read by someone who had just opened Filmina.

Fixes

  • The first time, the home screen flashed by for a frame before the welcome covered it. It waited for the engine to answer before deciding what to show; now that is decided before anything is drawn.

Listening is not remembering

1.1 · September 19, 2026

Every slide now ends with a question, and one in four asks you to tell it back out loud. Whatever does not come out stays marked for later.

New

  • Four ways of asking, taking turns: multiple choice, filling the gap, telling it out loud, and the open question. One of them alone, forty slides in a row, would always be the same exercise.
  • Tell it back: you talk for thirty seconds and it tells you which ideas you covered and which you did not. Explaining something is the only way to find out you did not understand it.
  • The model that listens downloads once, weighs 290 MB and runs on your Mac. The audio is not kept: it is transcribed and deleted, and closing the document releases the microphone.
  • What you did not get is marked in the script with one click, and from the home screen you go straight back to the first marked slide. Missing a question marks it on its own, and unmarking it brings the count back down.
  • Questions are thought up in the background, after the slide can already be played, so they never keep you waiting. The one that does not pass the checks is not shown, and a slide that is a title and a drawing is not asked about at all.
  • The first time, full screen: what this is, that every slide ends with a question, and that everything happens on your Mac. That is where you pick the model that explains and the one that listens.
  • The models download in the background: you pick, and keep using the app while they come down. The download can be paused and picked up later, and the settings row keeps saying how much is left.
  • The app settings, bottom left: the language and the models, with what each one weighs and a button to take them off the disk.
  • Tell us, right next to it: your name and whatever you want to say. It is the only thing in the app that goes out to the internet, and only if you send it.

Improvements

  • The PDF title is no longer explained on every slide. It repeated at the top of all of them, and on a slide that was just an image it ended up explained as if it were the subject.
  • A slide with nothing to read sends you to look at it, said in your language and without naming the slide number.
  • While the app starts up, the wait is the logo beating and nothing else. The caption narrating what it was doing asked to be read at the one moment there was nothing to do.

Fixes

  • If the engine you already had running was shut down, every explanation failed until you restarted Filmina. Now it starts its own and carries on.

The first one

1.0 · September 18, 2026

You drag a PDF in and someone explains it to you slide by slide, out loud, while a frame points at the part being talked about. It ships at a launch price: half of what it will cost, for a few days.

New

  • It all runs on your Mac. The PDF never leaves your machine, there is no account and there is no server of ours in the middle.
  • Summary, full and extended, from the top bar. Summary goes for the core ideas, full covers everything the slide says and extended adds the why and the usual mistakes.
  • The whole document is queued. While you listen to one slide, the rest is generated behind you, so in the long run you don't wait on any of them.
  • Opened recently: the list of your PDFs, with how far you got and how many slides are already done.
  • It comes back with the same settings you were listening with: voice, model and level of detail. That is what makes what was generated usable as is.
  • The bin deletes the whole document: the file, the rendered pages, the explanations and the audio. It asks for confirmation and takes itself back after four seconds.
  • Coverage is verified in code: it is checked that no block of text was left unexplained and, if one is missing, the model is asked again for that one only. It doesn't depend on the model behaving.
  • Headers, footers and diagram labels are discarded before explaining, so nobody reads you the file path printed at the bottom.
  • Mathematical notation is turned into words before synthesis: «P of A given B» and not the symbol read out loud.
  • Playback speed, which doesn't regenerate the audio.
  • The indicators can be turned off from the interface, in case they distract. It is remembered.

just one slide

Drop in that PDF you've been putting off and hear it explained. Thirty seconds is enough to know whether it's for you.
